Opening Day in a Deer Blind

The long-awaited opening day for Michigan’s firearm deer season is finally here.

It was a fairly mild 32 degrees just before sunrise today.

At least, that’s what ABC 10 news director Cynthia Thompson found when she went hunting today.

Here’s her story.

We headed to the woods at 6 am this morning.

I’ve piled on warm clothes and packed up some necessities: coffee, snacks and technology.

Our trail camera shows the raccoons, birds, bunnies and even a house cat recently visiting the bait pile.

It also has photographed some good-sized deer.

I sit patiently while my husband waits for the right deer.

Sitting patiently is not in my skill or talent set.

My husband, who is a patient sitter, patiently sat.

We saw nothing. Nada. Zilch.

It turned out to be a good investment.

Hand warmers: a couple of bucks.

Apples, pumpkins and carrots: about $50.

The look on his face when I said I would sit with him on opening day?

Priceless.

Neither of us bagged a buck, but we both got a dear, as in d–e–a–r.
