MTU officials seek to dismiss lawsuit against the university

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A motions hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids concerning Michigan Tech University’s decision to dismiss a student last year for an online post that went viral in a hurry.

Matthew Schultz was a student at Michigan Tech until he was expelled in January of 2016 for a post he made online that read ‘Gonna shoot all black people….. A smile tomorrow.’ Schultz made the post in November of 2015.

He was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor, which was later dismissed. Back in September, Schultz announced he was suing the school for his expulsion.

Schultz is seeking $75,000 in damages from the university. Tuesday’s court hearing is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. According to court documents, lawyers on behalf of Michigan Tech are seeking to have the lawsuit dismissed.
