One dead in head-on collision

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP — One person is dead and four others were injured after a head-on collision Monday morning on M-26 in Houghton County.

The accident occurred at 7:50 a.m. near Coal Dock Road in Franklin Township. A 2005 Chevy pickup driven by a 63-year-old man from Houghton hit a 2002 Honda Accord head-on.

The driver of the Accord, a 21-year-old Chassell man and a 21-year-old woman who was a passenger were both ejected from the vehicle. They were both taken to Aspirus Keweenaw and later flown to Aspirus Wausau, where the driver died due to the extent of his injuries.

The condition of the passenger is unknown at this time. The driver of the pickup had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Jaws of Life. Two passengers in his vehicle, a 61-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man from Dollar Bay, were both taken to Aspirus Keweenaw. The woman was later taken to UP Health System – Marquette for further treatment.

A 6-year-old boy also from Dollar Bay was uninjured in the crash, which at this time remains under investigation.
