Local bank donates funds to feed students

ISHPEMING — Today a local bank and an Ishpeming elementary school teamed up to ensure healthy food for students outside the classroom.

The Honor Foundation of Honor Credit Union donated four thousand dollars to Birchview Elementary School’s Hematite Pak Program. The Program feeds children ranging from kindergarten all the way to twelfth grade. Students are given a can of soup, chef Boyardee, cereal, raisins, apple sauce, granola bars, and fresh produce.

“Every week we pack 74 packs of nutritional food for children to take home over the weekends,” volunteer Diana Sundberg said. “And we will use the money to continue sending food home.”

The donations from bank members and employees will fund the program for the rest of the school year.

Branch Manager Jamie Gollackner said it’s a great opportunity for students, and the credit union prides itself on investing back into the community.

If you want your child to be a part of the program, notify a teacher or school counselor.
