Military heroes honored at Veterans Day ceremony

NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee VFW held their annual Veterans Day ceremony at Veterans Park Friday morning.

Those in attendance listened as the names of those who never made it home from battle were read aloud. For Tom Stanaway, who was honored a year ago as the U.P. Veteran of the Year, Veterans Day holds a significant place in his heart.

“Your mind goes zooming back to where you were when any person has been in the service,” said Stanaway.

“You don’t ever forget. It brings up good thoughts and also sad thoughts. It’s all fitting that we put both of them together, the ones who have passed and the ones who are alive and serving the country today in faraway places,” he added.

After the ceremony, everyone in attendance enjoyed a warm meal at the VFW. Veterans Day became a national holiday in 1938.
